Satellite comms pipe and pcoip zero clients

$

Team, I'm involved in a small project that requires the Customer to view a Wins 7 remote desktop in a location that can only be reached via a portable satellite system.

I'm experimenting in the lab with  VLC streaming and RDP but not having much joy owing to issues with streaming capture and bandwidth. The WIns 7 VM doesn't really cope with desktop capture even though it has pretty good resource.

The VM  is hosted on a Dell R730 (ESXi v6.0) with a K1 GPU and in a Horizon v6 environment using teradici pcoip zero clients.

Will a zero client running pcoip work over the satellite link?  I've read a few Horizon papers that mention the latency/RTT has to be <150msec so considering the uplink/downlink is probably >1000ms i suspect it might not work but part of me thinks these latencies are desirable and not essential.  I don't need the user to interact with the VM's desktop - just view a desktop that is playing a couple of low resolution VLC video windows.

Any suggestions to help me view this desktop using a product other than VLC or a zero client would be appreciated.

Is configuration with just one vCenter integrated with just one External PSC considered to be an implementation of Enhanced Linked Mode (ELM)?

Are these typologies illustrated, considered to be an implementation of Enhanced Linked Mode; or Enhanced Linked Mode considered to be implemented only by linking multiple vCenters connected to one or more PSCs?

6.7 U1 vCenter+ESXi - Windows Server 2019 - Page file error

Hi

Really weird problem.

When changing location of the windows page file and rebooting, windows will give the error: "windows created a temporary paging file on your computer because of a problem that occurred".

I have tried pretty much every combination of disk controller/MBR/GPT/Allocation unit Size/Page file size there is.

Anyone tried or able to reproduce the issue?

How to increase virtual disk size?

$

I have increased the size of Virtual Disk.vmdk in Window > Virtual Machine Library > Settings > Hard Disk (SCSI) from 60 GB to 120 GB. However, this change is not shown in the Windows 10 guest machine. This still shows Local Disk (C:) 13.7 GB free of 59.5 GB.

How do I complete the increase in virtual disk size?

VRASN 5 (vRA 7.5 + Kingston) vRA Catalog Items Visible without Form Details

I'm running vRA/SNOW Plugin V5 with Kingston.

The Plugin is freshly installed, connected to vRA, and Catalog & Category data loads appear successful.

I can see the vRA Catalog Items & Categories, but, when I attempt to open an item for ordering I see a spinning wheel for a while then a blank page:

In the ServiceNow (SNOW) "System" Logs & "Integration - vRealize Automation" Logs I see "Exception caught inside vra_sn ps catalogForm Widget.else: TypeError: Cannot read property "widget" from undefined":

However, I see all the Variables in the actual vRA Catalog Item record:

I've triple checked the plugin install guide and everything seems in order EXCEPT my client won't allow "delete" permissions on the specified tables for audit reasons.

Any help or leads appreciated.

Hello,

NSX mode ECMP is available under sous vCD ?

If yes, how is possible ? I don't see the option when deploying EDGE under vCD, only HA mode.

I mean natively under vCD.

I need to move a host that has running vms from one cluster to another. The source hosts and the hosts on the destination cluster shares commong dvs.

what is best way to do this?

I tried to disconnect and remove the host but lost the dvs and all the vms are now left with a blank network PG. They are all still online.

SO I added the host back into the source cluster and readded the host back into the dvs and still the vms are still left with a blank Port group setting

any idea?

Can guest see device if device not recognised properly in host?

$

It seems that the driver for a hardware device I have does not work on Windows 10 (yellow triangle beside the device in Device Manager). It works on Windows 7 though.

I though I could get it running by using a Win7 guest on Win10 host using VMware Player.

But it doesnt appear in the list of Removable Devices.

Am I right in thinking if the host OS cant get the driver to work properly, the guest will not be able to see the device either, and so there is no point it trying the above?

Scanner Redirection on MAC

Why does a MAC always have to be so difficult?  Trying to setup Canon Scanner on macbook and everything looks good except teh scanner icon says "Scanner Redirection for VMware Horizon Connection to client side is lost."  When i run the scanner diagnostics it shows All the scanners that loaded but the log says that "The DSM TWAINDSM.dll could not be opened."  I tried connecting it with and without the Scanner Redirection enabled on the client with no luck.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

Linked Cline vs instant clone (maintenance mode or vmotion support?)

$

With linked clones we can put a VM into maintenance mode to preserve that VM from being recomposed after logoff and we can vmotion linked clones between esx hosts. It appears we can't to this with instant clones? Is it a planned feature?

We have used these two techniques for esx maintenance and to preserve evidence on linked clones that have indications of compromise.

If these aren't planned features how should one go about accomplishing those two tasks?

Integrated Authentication for 'Connect-CisServer' is not working... should it?

Hi,

I am finding that, where Connect-VIServercan seamlessly/automatically authenticate using integrated authentication of my current logged in Windows domain user credentials, Connect-CisServercannot.

I can authenticate Connect-CisServer manually by typing my Windows domain user credentials and everything seems to work OK.

I am using PowerCLI v11.

Module: VMware.VimAutomation.Cis.Core

Version: 11.0.0.10335701

PSVersion: 5.1.14409.1018

Is this per design or is it a bug?

Thanks

NVIDIA Grid vGPU M10 performance issues with PCOIP protocol (high GPU utilization)

$

0

We have been working on implementing M10 vGPUs in our VMware environment and have been experiencing performance issues. We worked with NVIDIA to verify that the environment is setup correctly. Here is quick bullet point list for the environment.

  • vSphere 6.7
  • Host have VMware ESXi, 6.7.0
    • PowerEdge R740
    • Intel(R) Xeon(R) Platinum 8168 CPU @ 2.70GHz
    • 768 GB RAM
    • 2x M10 GPUs
  • Horizon 7.4.0
  • Linked Clones
    • Windows 10 1803 (also tried 1809 & 1709 builds)
    • 4 core
    • 8 GB RAM
    • M10-1B vGPU profile
    • Teradici based zero clients (PCOIP)

What we have noticed is after our first small set of user testing and no issues we began a larger test and noticed that once we hit about 15 users per M10 we began getting performance issue reports. The users are seeing lag in the interface, a right click on the desktop might take 5-10 seconds for the context menu to appear. The same could be seen with the start menu. Additionally these issues were only occurring on vGPU VMs. On the same host non vGPU VMs were not experiencing the same slowdowns. We began to notice that the pcoip_server_win32.exe was using a lot of CPU and GPU time via the task manager. We began trying different version of the vmware agent and direct connect, various revisions of the driver for esxi. We tried standalone fresh copies of windows 10 and various build numbers. Thus far no combination we have attempted has resolved the issues for vGPU machines when there are more than a few users per machine. The performance problem appears even if we use the Horizon software client and have it set to PCoIP.

We tried running it with different Horizon Agent versions (6, 7.0.2, 7.2.0, 7.4.0, 7.5.1, 7.6 & 7.7) and using direct connect bypassing Horizon Server.

We also tried running VMs using VMware Blast protocol and it didn’t have the high GPU usage issues, but unfortunately, almost all of our thin clients only support PCOIP.

Attaching screenshot below: please note the GPU utilization of PCoIP Server (32bit) process.

UPDATE 1:

After a long discussion with NVIDIA, they concluded that it's not on their side.

They pointed us at this KB: https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4156/~/nvidia-smi-shows-high-gpu-utilization-for-vgpu-vms-with-active-horizon-session

Looks like it's a known issue with Teradici PCOIP protocol and it hasn't been fixed yet.

UPDATE 2:

I tried downloading and installing Teradici's PCOIP Agent (PCoIP_agent_release_installer_graphics.exe) direct from Teradici. Then I ran "NvFBCEnable.exe -disable", it disables NVFBC capture and switches back to CPU. And it works great - no GPU spike when idle and a much better performance overall.

However, when I try to do this on Horizon Agent's Teradici protocol it disables NvFBC for a brief period of time and then as soon as I reconnect via PCOIP it re-enables it back, see extract from a log below:

  1. Svgadevtap:NvFBCFixed capture by enabling NvFBC

Is there a way to permanently disable NvFBC on Horizon Agent's Teradici Protocol?

Hi all,

I've added the usb controller and 2 usb Hard drives to a Windows 2016 VM in vcentre but the drives do not show up to add them in VMRC so they are not visible within the VM.

Any ideas?

VM Tools removable causes issue

Has anyone had weird issues after removing VM Tools from Workstation (14)?

I develop software using the Qt cross-platform tool and VS++ compiler on a Windows 10 VM.  My application uses PostgreSQL database, where I complied the Qt/PostgreSQL plug-in driver that gets dynamically loaded in the developed program.   I wanted to move my VM to XenServer, so I uninstalled VM Tools before exporting it.

however, after I removed VM Tools and try to execute my developed program, it complains that it couldn't find/load the plug-in into my program.  After importing the .ovf into XenServer, it does the same.  I re-applied the VM Tools to the Workstation VM, re-exported it and imported it into XenServer.  The VM in XenServer works and my program execute ok,  but the VM is slow... as soon as I removed VM Tools, it speeds up but my program has the same issue not loading the plugin.  Tried the same using VBox and had the same issue.

Not sure what VM Tools has to do with it, but that's the common denominator.

Thanks.

Alert "Errors occurred on the disk(s) of a vSAN host" is not clear even the disk has been recovered.

Hi all,

I faced a problem from testing SSD cache failure.

I removed the disk by python /usr/lib/vmware/vsan/bin/vsanDiskFaultInjection.pyc -u -d UUID command and the error alert "Errors occurred on the disk(s) of a vSAN host" was come out.

After that, I did rescan storage for purpose of recovery task and the disk become healthy again.

But the error alert wasn't clear automatically by themselves.

-Do the alert should clear automatically by themselves?

-Do we need to do reset to green for the alert?

-Have any solution to clear the alert without doing reset to green?

Thanks

How can I remove snapshots on a schedule - Power Cli

$

Hi,

My Power Cli skills are limited please bear this in mind.

VSphere 6.5 running on Linux. Most of the VMs are Windows servers.

I have scheduled Snapshots in VSphere of servers just before the Monthly Windows updates are applied.

This is easy enough to do and the Snapshots are created using the naming convention e.g.:  "Monthly snapshot for ServerXYZ 3rd Monday at 01:00"

Management insist Snapshots are taken just before the Windows updates every month.

Of course I want to delete the snapshots pretty quickly and we have agreed that they can be deleted after three days.

I want my PowerCli script to run on a windows 2016 server and so I have installed PowerCli and I can manually run the following commands:

Connect-VIServer -Server myvcenterserver -User Blah -Password BlahBlahBlah

this connects me to the vcenter no problem

then I run

Get-VM | Get-Snapshot | Where {$_.Name -like "*Monthly*" -and $_.Created -lt (Get-Date).AddDays(-3)} | Remove-Snapshot -Confirm:$false

sure enough this runs and deletes any snapshot more than three days old with the word Monthly in the title. Hoorah!

Im trying to automate this using a Scheduled task but im stumped on how I can get it to connect and then to carry out the "remove snapshot" bit.

Alternatively I could  use SCCM to do this but I run into the same problem where regular Powershell does not seem to know about PowerCli for example:

Connect-VIServer : The term 'Connect-VIServer' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, etc etc

How do I get this simple command to run on a schedule?
