How do I rename folders in ESXi on a datastore?

$
0
0

This might sound a bit noobish, but after the upgrade of my ESXi machine to 6.5.0 Update 2 (Build 8935087) (and afterwards not being able to use the vSphere desktop client anymore), I'm quite puzzled on how to rename a folder on a datastore in the "web client". I always copied virtual machines by creating a folder and copy/pasting the files of a vm template in it and then import it as a new machine.

esxi.JPG

I don't see a rename option anywhere, neither the files nor the directories seem to be able to be renamed (and also selecting multiple files at once). I can move and copy directories, but not the badly needed renaming. What am I not seeing here?

Best regards,

Matthias

Unable to Delete VMDK File

I recently deleted a VM with a large (1.4TB) VMDK file attached. When I checked the datastore a few weeks later a there was still a "vmname-flat.vmdk" file left over. However when I tried to delete it via the vSphere client I got an error saying "cannot delete file [DATASTORE_NAME] vmname-flat.vmdk". I connected to an ESXi host in the cluster and tried to delete it from there. Running "rm vmname-flat.vmdk" resulted in the error:

"rm: can't remove 'vmname-flat.vmdk': Bad address"

At the same time the following event was logged in vmkernel.log:

"2015-08-27T11:09:02.904Z cpu7:18223819)Fil3: 8848: Truncating <FD c157 r32> failed: Invalid address"

I have tried from a few different ESXi hosts, all with the same result. running lsof shows that the file is not locked by any process.

How can I delete this file?

Anyone know why VCSA 6.7.0.14000 would give me NaN at appliance monitoring GUI and blank graphs elsewhere?

Hi everyone,

I noticed that VCSA 6.7.0.14000 appliance management GUI (port 5480) would show blank graphs for CPU, RAM and Network. Digging deeper I found an anomaly other than blank graphs. The disk monitor status shows NaN for all disks?

Anyone have any suggestions? Other than this VCSA works with no identifiable defects. This is a brand new install straight from the executable installer. No upgrades, no prior versions. The health status is green on all categories and the VM's usage as seen from ESXi is minimal.

Here's the details on this installation:

Type: vCenter Server with an embedded Platform Services Controller

Product: VMware vCenter Server Appliance

Version: 6.7.0.14000 Build number 9451876

Thank you

Working on behalf of a friend. She has a Windows XP Pro VM she's used for years as her POS. The VM just started saying a vmx file is corrupted.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm also fine paying someone for their time, if they want to remote in and work on this VM.

Thanks,

we have around 28vcenter servers, if i want to work a script for  a VM or cluster or esxi host, i am getting tough time to find its vcenter server. then i am connecting to it and working on any script.

is there any other methods will ease my job, like creatingsimple apis from existing inventroy.

now i am using by giving input of vcneter as csv files, connecting one by one to find the host or vm.

i tried to get the excel invetory of vms or esxi list and update it periodically and use its vcenter value, but we have huge amount of list, hence it is taking long time.

so looking for an easy option.

Service-now catalog item shows up, but no data / fields inside

Hello.

we are running ITSM4.0 with VRA 7.3.1 and Service-now Jakarta.

We can import the catalog items into service now and are displayed correctly.  But when you click on the catalog item in service-now, no fields are displayed.  Can't see the CPU, MEM, Storage, or hostname fields.  the form is completely blank.

We do see this error message in the Service-now debug log.

VRASNImportCatalog.insertVariableValidation:  Exception Caught inside VRASNImportCatalog.insertVariableValidation:  ConversionError:  The undefined value has no Properties.

any help or direction would be appreciated.

Touchpanel not working in VM-Ware Linux Guest

$

Hi toghether,

I'm working on a Windows 7 Host, the device is a Advantech DLT-V8312, an industrial touch computer.

It has a touch display (but I didn't find the specs of it in Windows settings).

On the Windows host, everything works as you are used from f.e. a normal touch device like your smartphone. You click somewhere, the real "mouse" vanishes and a small dot pulls up at the destination you wanted to click, performing the real "mouse-click".

On the linux guest, nothing works. I'm using Ubuntu 16.04 with VM Workstation Pro 15.

The touch panel does exist as a device at the bottom of the VM-menue, so i could connect it as a device to the linux guest (but then it get's lost on the windows host). When connecting it to the guest, it then works like a touchpad (like on your laptop), not a touchpanel. So moving the finger over the display acts like moving the mouse. The "mouse" never jumps directly to the position I click.

I already tries to change the settings from "xinput" to mode "Absolute". That's not possible, error "Bad_Mode".

Also, I don't really like that you cant use the mouse in the windows host, because you are also unable to change it back with only the touchpad.

So, my wish would be: The touchpanel stays connected to the windows host, but if you click inside the linux guest it's connected as it should be, like a touch panel (so the same funktionality like in windows). The same is already possible with a nomal usb-mouse, right?

If I don't connect it to the linux guest via the VM menue, there are still two "PS/2 VMware VMMouse" listed in "xinput list", one of them is the connected usb mouse with mode relative (tested via "xinput disable <id>"), the other one is mode absolute and maybe the touch-panel?

But clicking on the panel just ends in the mouse jump to the same position everytime. Moving the finger above the screen results in moving the mouse with your finger, but clicking kind of "resets" the position. I hope you understand the behaviour

So, is there anyone kind of having an idea for my problem? Any tips/solutions?

Thank you very much in advance, I already spend several hours trying things found on the internet...

Hi,

I have a problem. I just converted my physical machine (lenovo Laptop, windows 8.1), with the vmware vcenter converter standalone. Everything worked fine, no problems, no errors.

But when I want to open the file in vmware on my Ubtunu machine (a.t.m. dual-boot with win8 on the same laptop), after a while it returns the error:

Failed to lock the file

Cannot open the disk '/media/remy/WD My Book/Laptop-Remy/Laptop-Remy.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.

Module DiskEarly power on failed.

Failed to start the virtual machine.

I don't know if has to do with Ubutntu (version 13.04), or with vmware workstation (10.0)

I hope some can help.

thanks in advantage,

Buongiorno a tutti.

Help! Upgrade to 6.7 fails with "cannot execute upgrade script on host"

$

Hi,

I started by uppgrading our Vcenter appliance from 6.0 to 6.7. I then used the Update Manager in Vcenter to upgrade 1 of our 2 hosts (in cluster) to 6.7.

I got the "Errno 39: Directory not empty" error and followed KB: VMware Knowledge Base

I then restarted the upgrade and it chugged along fine. It seemed to complete normally on the physical hosts monitor, but in Vcenter the progress bar seemed stuck. After a while the TASK says "cannot execute upgrade script on host". The new version number (6.7) shows both on the physical monitor and in Vcenter.

When I try to rerun the "Remediation" it just keeps giving "cannot execute upgrade script on host" immediately. I have checked that there is disk space on the host.

Also, the host seems to work as normal. It runs VMs etc. Did the upgrade succeed? Is it normal to get this error when rerunning the remediation?

Thank you.

Edit:

Things i've tried so far (without success):
- Removing host from cluster and uninstalling FDM

Questions on Virtual Disk's UUID

$

Hi all,

The API reference does not have much description about Virtual Disk UUID and so I would like to ask couple of questions.

I am referring to the UUID we can retrieve from Virtual Disk's BackingInfo (virtualmachine.config.hardware.device[xxxx].backing.uuid)

1. Is this UUID unique within the vCenter Server?

2. If a disk is detached from the one VM and then attached to another VM, is this UUID guaranteed to remain the same? Assuming that the Virtual Disk's vmdk files were not altered.

Thanks.
