Latest updates for ESXi 6.5

According to KB 2143832, the latest update for ESXi 6.5 is ESXi 6.5 P03, Release Name ESXi650-201811002, Build number 10884925, released 11/29/2018.  However, when I go to download updates to ESXi 6.5, the latest update listed is ESXi 6.5 U2, dated 05/03/2018.

Where do I find ESXi 6.5 PO3 for VMware Essentials Plus?

Thanks,

Dan

Fusion 11 problems on 2018 MacBook Pro, i9, 32 GB, 1TB running Windows 10

Windows 10 takes forever to boot and shut down.  It is extremely slow when running and basically unusable.  I have changed processor and memory allocation with little to no impact.

A secondary issue is USB dongles for software licenses work on a random basis.

Any suggestions?  Are others having the same issue?

Thank you.

Replacing Esxi 4.0 Server

I have a single VMware esxi 4.0.0 server, running free version.

There are zero internal hard drives.  All vm's are connected via iscsi datastores across network on nas drive.

The hardware for this one server is getting old.

I would like to purchase a replacement server, such as an HP ProLiant G7 rack server, again with minimal to no hard drives on board as all vm's will continue to be hosted on externally on nas storage, the new host will simply be the esxi host with more speed and ram.

What is the most recent "free" version of esxi that I can download and install on the new server and is there anything else required on the new host other than recreating the iscsi-datastore and point to the existing vm's?

AMD GPU Information / Experiences

Hello Horizon community,

We're running a small Horizon 7.3 pilot deployment in our office, and are preparing to roll it out to a wider audience.  In advance of that, I'm looking at adding a GPU to the primary VDI host.  The licensing prices of NVIDIA are a significant pain point, so I'm looking at using one of the AMD GPUs in a shared pass-through configuration.

I've spent some time looking at the AMD web site, trying to gain some understanding of the differences between their cards, and trying to identify which card would be best suited for our environment and infrastructure.  I've also tried contacting AMD through their email link to speak to a salesperson to gain some more information.  So far, my results have been .... limited.  The links on AMD's web site take me on a circular journey back to their starting point, my email request has gone answered for the better part of a week, and my phone efforts have had literally zero success.  I have yet to speak with anyone on the AMD sales side.

I'm wondering if anyone here in the Horizon community can talk at all about the AMD lineup.  I'm curious about the differences between the S7100X family of cards, the S7150 family, and the Radeon Pro V340 series.  AMD's web page also references an S9170 series, an S9150 series, and even an S9300 series, but there is no detail behind the links.  Clicking on a "Learn More" link often comes back to the same page.

Any information would be appreciated.  A contact name and phone number at AMD would be perfect.  I spoke to one of their reps at VMworld 2018, and he gave me his business card, but I have misplaced it.  Little did I know that it was as valuable as one of Wonka's Golden Tickets!

Thanks in advance for your comments on this, and for sharing any information or experiences you have had using an AMD card in your respective Horizon deployments.  Thanks also for taking the time to read this.

VMWare Fusion Professional Version 8.5.10 (7527438)

When I power-on the VM, MacBook fan starts to run very noisy and get machine hot. I've seen in Activity Monitor that a process "vmware-vmx" is hanging a lot of CPU (about 100-150% at any time).

I got a Windows 10 Enterprise VM with dedicated/allocated 2 cores and 8GB RAM. I power-on the virtual machine and min later the fans are running very fast and Activity Monitor shows that vmware-vmx is using +100% CPU.

I've tried to play with the resources, turn off accelerate 3D graphics but no result. What can I do to troubleshoot and how do I get to the root cause. This issue was not even noticeable a year ago but not sure what changed to all the sudden heat up and run high CPU.

Help please!

No objects are displayed in the inventory - vCenter 5.1

Good afternoon,

I have a client that is indicating that the VMs are disconnected in their vCenter, that was the day of yesterday, today I connect to check the vCenter, and observed that there are no objects in the inventory of the vCenter. Host, VM, Datastores or switches are not displayed, even I am entering with the user administrators.

However, at the vCenter services level everything is Ok. I think you should add the hosts again the inventory.

In the same way I listen to your suggestions.

Windows crashed many time, all with vmx86.sys. Uninstalled and re-installed back, same issue.

Windows:     Version 1809 (OS Build 17763.253)

VMWare:     15.0.2 build-10952284

crash dump file: C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP

uptime: 16:01:39

This was probably caused by the following module: vmx86.sys (vmx86+0x100a)

Bugcheck code: 0x101 (0x5, 0x0, 0xFFFFC781FAAA6180, 0x20)

Error: CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT

file path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\vmx86.sys

product: VMware kernel driver

company: VMware, Inc.

description: VMware kernel driver

Bug check description: This indicates that an expected clock interrupt on a secondary processor, in a multi-processor system, was not received within the allocated interval. This can be caused by non-responding hardware or by a overheated CPU (thermal issue).

A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: vmx86.sys (VMware kernel driver, VMware, Inc.).

Google query: vmx86.sys VMware, Inc. CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT

Unable to refresh request form from the server Invalid argument (vRA + vRO 7.3)

I have a property defined with external value (vRO action). When selecting an IaaS catalog item with this property included the following error appears at the top of the browser:

Unable to refresh request form from the server Invalid argument

If I re-configure the property definition back to static ...

apples:apples

oranges:oranges

bananas:bananas

... then it works fine. I have seen differing solutions that either return a value of type string/array or Properties. Regardless of what my vRO action returns I get the same error indicated in the title:

var myReturnValue = [ 'apples' , 'oranges' , 'bananas' ]
return myReturnValue

.... or ....

var myReturnValue = { 'apple':'apple' , 'oranges':'oranges , 'bananas':'bananas' }
return myReturnValue

.... or ....

var myReturnValue = new Properties()
myReturnValue.put ( 'apples' , 'apples' )
myReturnValue.put ( 'oranges' , 'oranges' )
myReturnValue.put ( 'bananas' , 'bananas' )
return myReturnValue

The action logs the value of myReturnValue as well as the object type and object class name just to confirm I have the right type. When I compare my code to other code in the environment or code provided by VMware (all of the referenced actions in Configuration Details for the vRealize Orchestrator Action Custom Property Definitions) I don't see any real difference.

  1. Any ideas what to try next?
  2. Is there a log file to check on the vRA+vRO appliance that would help?

VCSA 6.7 backup doesn't always display previous jobs

I'm noticing that whenever i go into the VAMI (? the port 5480 interface) and check the backup activity to make sure everything is still working, I'm having a hard time getting the data to show up. I've got one VCSA with 164 backups listed (only keep a rolling 30 days on disk though) and it can take a few page refreshes and clicking on another section and then back on the backup section before it loads and I can see ths history to make sure everything is reporting as complete and working as expected.

Anyone else seeing this or know how to make it load successfully the first time?

10Gb networking in VMware Workstation

$

Hello all,

I find it difficult to get results from google searches. Has anyone been able to get 10Gb networking to run at a decent performance(>1.5Gbps) in VMware Workstation?

I have two machines with 10Gb HW network adapters connected point-to-point.

1. FreeNAS server with a samba share.

2. Win10 host running WS 15 with another FreeNAS server VM running.

Network is setup as bridged inside the VM, the adapter HW is VMXNET3 set from editing the .vmx file

In normal operation, copying from machine 1 samba share to local disk on machine 2 works with 1.15GB/s. Both machines are reading/writing to SSD media, they are able to saturate the 10Gb link copying to/from shares in the host OS.

Copying data from machine 1 samba share to the guest VM samba share on machine 2 from the host OS results in 100Mb/s at best, average is less than that. Guest OS configures the VMXNET3 card just fine, it comes with vmware-tools preinstalled.

Guest VM has 4 cores allocated and 32Gb of RAM. Host CPU is I7 9800X@3.8Ghz base clock.

I know VMXNET3 on WS is not really supported but I would expect at least higher than 1Gbps speeds.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have XUbuntu 16.04.5 (32-bit version) on my computer, and downloaded the VMWare Horizon View client (version 4.9).

Whenever I attempt to login to my work VDI, there is a 2-step authentication process which seems successful, but then when I open a desktop, it always closes immediately.

I posted to the parent forum of this forum but no troubleshooting suggestions yet beyond what I already tried, for example:

which haven't worked so far.  Any other suggestions?

No Network Connection after Migration

$

Dear Community

We are operating several ESXI Hosts with various servers.

We have an infrastructure counting 7 servers in a separate VLAN. We have recently introduced a new host an wanted to migrate all 7 servers on the new host.

When migrating the DomainController, we do not manage to have Internet Connection; "unknown network" is displayed. When leaving the domain controller on the old ESXI host and migrating the other 6 servers, we have made the experience that 2 servers have network and the other 4 have not.

Versions used:

New Host: VMware ESXi, 6.5.0, 8294253

Old Host: VMware ESXi, 6.0.0, 3620759

Servers:

Domain Controller: Server 2012R2, VM-Version 11

Other Servers: Server 2012R2, VM-Version 8

One Server: Server 2016, VM-Version 11

We have already checked our infrastructure regarding VLAN configuration. It seems all ok there, especially as two servers are running.

Is this a known issue?

Many thanks,

Marianne

UEM hanging/delaying randomly.

Running horizon 7.6 with UEM 9.5 and appvol 2.14.  Parent is windows 10 1607 LTSB, floating instant clones.  App data is not redirected, documents/favorites/desktop/etc.. are.

Occasionally i am seeing login delays when processing UEM.  On average UEM processes between 5-6 seconds.  However we have some users that it takes 25+ seconds occasionally with UEM not reporting why.

Example from logs:

2018-12-12 07:57:37.331 [INFO ] Config file '\\jfv-vm-fs2\UEM Configuration\general\Applications\Acrobat Reader.INI' added to DirectFlex cache

2018-12-12 07:57:56.269 [INFO ] Config file '\\jfv-vm-fs2\UEM Configuration\general\Applications\Adobe Acrobat.INI' added to DirectFlex cache

2018-12-12 08:39:13.444 [DEBUG] ImportRegistry::Import: Calling '"C:\Windows\REGEDIT.EXE" /S "C:\Users\test\AppData\Local\Temp\FLX6AB5.tmp"' (RPAL: l=0 (D/E), r=0)

2018-12-12 08:39:13.490 [DEBUG] Read 3 entries from profile archive (size: 151258; compressed: 31466; took 64 ms; largest file: 83810 bytes; slowest import took 0 ms)

2018-12-12 08:39:32.428 [DEBUG] Conditions: Condition set 'Microsoft Office 2013.xml' was previously evaluated to true

2018-12-12 14:02:29.110 [DEBUG] Read 25 entries from profile archive (size: 63987712; compressed: 7889959; took 427 ms; largest file: 26738688 bytes; slowest import took 154 ms)

2018-12-12 14:02:48.063 [DEBUG] Conditions: Check for endpoint name = false ('C81MK6V1' is not equal to 'LJ2359H2')

I can reproduce this by logging in over and over.  At times it happens, at times it does not although frequently enough it is easily reproducible.  It does not appear to be related to any specific pool or UEM setting.  It also isn't tied to any specific hosts, users, or type of client (thin or laptop), or version of horizon.

The UEM data is stored on a windows 2008 R2 server file share, which is a VM running off an all flash datastore on a Dell Compellent.  There are no indications the Compellent it is struggling to server the data, or on the file server.  This is as likely to happen during the morning login as it is when people leave for the day.

This appears to of been going on for a long while, this environment is just now getting healthy enough from the previous admin to where smaller issues like this can be tracked down.  But my googlefu is failing to find any possible solutions for this.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Billy
