Managing vSphere licenses with large environments

$

Hi,

We have an environment with 30 vCenter instances and 2300 hosts. The person managing the licensing part has left the company and now i am left with some questions regarding licenses moving forward. All vCenters are not linked, and the number of hosts per vCenter varies with each instance.

We have a plan to upgrade to vSphere 6.0 and i'm not sure how to generate license keys so that they are easiest to manage. Could you help answering these questions?

#1 - If I generate a single license key, valid for 30 vCenter instances, and I assign to each vCenter individually, am I breaching the EULA in any way?

We will never assign for more than what we are entitled to, but does it constitute a breach?

#2 - If #1 is not possible, that means, given I have no linked more configuration, that we need 1 license per instance?

#3 - Same questions for ESXi hosts. Can we just have 1 license key for all hosts, and we enter it in all vCenters, and we are responsible for making sure we never go over the assigned limit overall? Or we need only licenses never used in any other vcenter instance?

vSphere Client console only showing part of VM screen

I saw a similar thread, but no answer that has helped.

ESXi6 build 2494585 / vCenter 6 build 3634793 Windows version

Web Client is borked due to DNS issue, and I'm trying to fix the AD/DNS server which is a VM on this ESXi under this vCenter.  When I open the console from the vSphere Client (non Web Client), I get the upper left part of the VM screen (see attached image), which makes it really hard to use the VM.  The slider bars don't actually do anything.  Tried resizing window, checking/unchecking autofit.  Fit Window / Guest seem greyed out.

vm_console_fragment.png

Happens on all the VMs I've tried, whether vSphere Client logged in to VC or ESXi.

Tried increasing video memory for the VM.  Installed VMware Tools on one VM that didn't have it.  (That's really fun when you can only see about 1/9th of the screen!)
I suspect video driver or something on my laptop, and gonna ask other on my team what they see, but wanted to hear if the mindshare here has seen similar.

Thanks!

Hello all -

I've had an eval version of ESXi installed and running successfully for about a month. As of last week, when I browse to the hypervisor, I get

unhandled exception (1)

Details are below.

So far I've tried reloading the page, rebooting the hypervisor, and trying from another client, with no success. Vmware vSphere Client can attach with no error. Any advice where to look next?

SNMP agent problem after update to VCSA 6 update 2

Hi, yesterday I updated VCSA appliance from version 6u1 to 6u2 and after the update I have problems with SNMP agent.

The SNMP agent was working after restart about 30 minutes and then it stopped responding to SNMP queries.

I tried another reboot, and it was the same. So I reset SNMP agent using snmp.reset and configured again communities and enabled SNMP agent using snmp.enable, then again it worked about 30 minutes and stopped responding to SNMP queries.

I also checked if the snmpd service is running and it is. Sometimes it helps to restart snmpd service, but not every time.

Can someone please advise?

I have horizon client 4.4, does this client automatically update with windows or is it something i'll have to go machine to machine with?  Maybe find 3rd party patching software?

reduce delay in resxtop data gatherer

Does anyone know if there is a way to have the esxtop data gather at a higher frequency?  By default it is gathering data at 20 second intervals, but I am profiling how some SAN deployments handle bursty IO.  I looked through the scripts in the analyzer VM, and can't find where the call to actually start resxtop is stored.  During batchmode esxtop collections you can just specify a "-d n" parameter, but I can't find where I could slip in that option in io analyzer's setup.

FIX: After Workstation 11 install "Open with VMRC" opens in Workstation

After installing VMware Workstation 11, my "Open with VMRC" links in the vSphere Web Client started opening in Workstation 11. This is actually kind of cool, but I prefer to have it use the regular VMRC. Noticed that 7.0.1 of VMRC was released on February 11th. Installing 7.0.1 fixed my "Open with VMRC" problem. Just thought I would pass this along in case others were struggling with the same thing.

There are no release notes that I was able to find on 7.0.1. Does anyone know if one exists?

SR-IOV support for Cisco VIC 1225 with ESXi

I was not able to find the answer online for the following question: does ESXi supports Cisco VIC 1225 NIC in SR-IOV mode?

The NIC itself supports SR-IOV, I used it in SR-IOV mode under RHEL. But ESXi (5.5 and 6.5) show "SR-IOV not supported".

How can I use Cisco VIC 1225 with SR-IOV under ESXi?

Tried to update / use the latest enic / nenic drivers – no luck.

Rolling back after upgrades/patches

$

Hi All, looking for some advice.

I have an issue with Backup Exec randomly failing to complete snapshot backups, theres an equal balance of it failing and succeeding with no apparent pattern.

Each time the backup fails it corresponds to an error in vCenter Server as attached,

So i have looked endlessly for a solution to no avail.

My final idea is to bring the ESX servers all the way up to date as far as but not including Update 3. i have read some articles that suggest there is a patch that will resolve the problem i'm having (ESXi600-201610001) so i have found the bulletin this relates to and applied this baseline to my hosts, poised to remediate and test.

However, i read on the vmware KB article under deployment considerations that this update can cause problems with Gen9 HP proliant servers, which this is booting, to do with the scsi driver being updated if its installed from a HP image, again which this is currently running ESXi 6.0U2 build 3620759!

The problem is i am in the UK and the host is in Spain so if it goes belly up i've got not local support other than users to talk through rolling it back. Its a live server with hosts and i have no other way of testing this.

My question is this, with the edited baselines attached to the hosts, i'm showing 21 critical host patches, and 53 non critical (This contains the patch mentioned above). If i remediate the hosts and it has problems booting the patched ESX install, if i use the Shift R option to recover will it recover to the point before it applied ANY of the patches i.e clicked remediate, or does the number of updates have any significance like rolling back to the last successful update? Does it take a snapshot of the hypervisor before it applies updates full stop and this is what i would roll back to?

Thanks in advance!

Intermittent unresponsiveness on Windows Server 2008 R2

$

Dear All,

Our infrastructure is a Vmware vsphere 6 host OS which serves 3 Windows Server 2008 r2 as guest OSes.

The users connect through RDP from Linux thin clients to the three Windows Server 2008 r2 by means of Terminal Server

We have an issue with those Windows Server 2008 R2. During network congestion, all users from the three Terminal Server receive unresponsive status on their sessions.

During such unresponsiveness, on taskmgr CPU appears at 6%, the RAM memory is used at 60% and the disk activity appears at 1 Mbyte/sec. The network activity during it vary between 4Mbps and 100Mbps from one of the Windows Server 2008 r2 -probably similar on the rest of two Windows Server

There are 17 users per Terminal Server. When one of the users from one Terminal Server experiences the unresponsiveness, all the users from the three Terminal Servers experience it as well.

I suspect this is something related to the windows network configuration or the vmxnet3 network adapter configuration.

I tried enabling Receive Side Scale on the vmxnet3 properties, but the unresponsiveness periods became longer in time, so I disabled it again.

I show you the Windows network configuration:

C:\Users\juan.magraner>netsh int tcp show global

And the vmxnet3 configuration is as follows:

SQl Plugin - LAST_INSERT_ID()

$

Hello,

Trying to use the SQL Plugin, I'm doing a insert into, and then I want to retrieve the id of that operation. But it always returns 0.

My guess is that the executeCustomQuery, vs readCustomQuery, is not in the same connection ? If I go directly into my MySQL server, and do the same insert, I get the id without any issue. But with VRO it doesn't work. I could extract the last id from the table, but that's not the best thing to do, is there something else I could do in my code to get the id ?

Here's my code:

var date = (new Date(Date.now() - ((new Date()).getTimezoneOffset() * 60000))).toISOString().slice(0, 19).replace('T', ' ');
var query = "INSERT INTO nas (project_id, creator_id, request_type_id, charge_io_id, stockage_type_id, service_id, operating_system_id," +             "site_id, comments, status, servers, created_at, updated_at) VALUES ('" + project_id + "'," + demandeur_id + "," + request_type_id + "," +             charge_io_id + "," + stockage_type_id + "," + service_id + "," + operating_system_id + "," + site_id + ",'" + comments + "','created','" +             serveurs + "','" + date + "','" + date + "');";

System.log(query);
var response = execQuery(query,"exec");
System.log(response);

query = "SELECT LAST_INSERT_ID();";
var response = execQuery(query,"read");
System.log(response);
System.log(response[0].getProperty(response[0].getFieldNames()[0]));

/////////////////////////////////////////////////// function /////////////////////////////////////////////////////
function execQuery(query, type){
  try {  if (type == 'exec'){  var response = database.executeCustomQuery(query);  } else if (type == 'read'){  var response = database.readCustomQuery(query);  } else {  throw 'Query type invalide';  }  } catch (e) {  throw 'Couldn\'t get a response from the database. Error: ' + e;  }  return response;
}

And the logs:

[2017-04-26 09:07:24.499] [I] INSERT INTO nas (project_id, creator_id, request_type_id, charge_io_id, stockage_type_id, service_id, operating_system_id,site_id, comments, status, servers, created_at, updated_at) VALUES ('536',23,36,39,42,45,80,63,'test','created','asd','2017-04-26 09:07:24','2017-04-26 09:07:24');

Upgrade from 6.2 to 7.1

Hi,

I have an upgrade schedule for this weekend from Horizon 6.2 to 7. I was curious if it's ok to go straight from 6.2 to 7.1 while skipping 7.0. If it is, are there any caveats that are not listed in the patch notes I should worry about?

Thank you!

How to rebuild vROps vApp Container Data from PowerCLI

$

Greetings all.  Wondering if I could get some help on this one.  We recently migrated our vROp 6.4 cluster to a new datacenter/vcenter using SRM & vSphere Replication and it didn't bring over the vApp data.  The recovered as straight VMs w/o any of the vApp properties.

There's an old KB on how to use PowerCLI for this scenario but was for a very old version of vROps back when it was still vCOps and had seperate UI & Analytics nodes but all that (including the vApp container data) has since changed.  https://kb.vmware.com/kb/2031891

I still have the source VMs objects still in my old vCenter and all the original vApp properties for each VM are still there so I'm guessing there's a way to powercli this.  Just looking for suggestions.

Thanks!

Esxi host disconnected in Vcenter 6.0

$

Hi,

We currently have 2 identical hardware ESXI 6.0 hosts connected to Vcenter 6.0.

One esxi 6.0 host has an additional VLAN for Voice and is in a disconnected state on Vcenter. I can ping the default VLAN IP and DNS name from every device on the network except from the Vcenter server. From the Vcenter server I can not  ping the default  VLAN by IP or DNS name, but can ping the Voice VLAN.

There are 2 vswitches and Vswitch0 has the only Vkernal for Management Network and the Vlan is set to 0

Any ideas would be appreciated

Question re FTT=0 for non-essential VMDK's

$

hi all

I have a VSAN Datastore that i need to deploy some large SQL VM's on.  To minimise the amount of  space used by 'replicas' for non-essential drives, such as the backup drive on the sql server, i was contemplating creating a storage policy with FTT=0.  I would apply this policy to the SQL Backup drives - lets call it the F drive.  FTT=1 for all other drives.

My question is to understand the impact to the availability of the F drive should a disk / host fail that some of the F drives components are running on.

If i have a FTT=0 policy applied to a VMDK (F drive), and a piece of hardware that is running some of the F drives components fails, the VMDK will become unavailable.

If this situation occurred, is it still possible to perform a resync of the components that are on the failed piece of hardware so that they are rebuilt elsewhere in the cluster ? So whilst the VMDK will not be continuously available as would be the case of FTT=1, after a brief period of unavailabilitty while the components are rebuilt, the components on the failed piece of hardware would be rebuilt elsewhere - therefore avoiding the need of creating a new VMDK

Is that assumption correct ?

thanks in advance

Get all VMs that automatically start with Host

Script to get all VMs that automatically start with a host and remove the automatic startup functionality. Im not even sure how to start this. I imagine to find all VMs that start with a host, it would be something like this:

Foreach($VM in Get-VM) | Select-Object Name, AutomaticStartAction

But the above doesn't populate the AutomaticStartAction column. And I don’t know the command to remove the AutomaticStart Action

Any help would be appreciated
