Hey guys,
Had a wierd issue 2 days ago where a VM crashed for no reason (its our main email VM serving around 300 users). It was working then all of a sudden went offline. I couldn't reset it in Vsphere when conencted directly to the server. I ended up removing it from the inventory as I figured it was off. When trying to re-add it to the inventory it would come up as "unknown" for the VM name in the list of VMs. I tried to start it but it wouldn't start. I removed it again and this time it wouldn't register so Is tarted to panic. i thought perhaps the VMX file is corrupted (I checked it out and it was fine) so I was preparingt o create a new VM and attach the disks to the new VM when suddenly I saw ane mail popup on my phone and it was runninga gain. The only thing is it doesn't show in the list of VMs so kind of like a ghost VM?
Having a look in the datastore it has a huge snapshot, more than 500GB. I get this all the time with Veeam 6.5 where it doesn't delete the snapshot after a backup job. Perhaps the snapshot is too big for the vspehre client to show the VM running? I had exactly the same situation with another VM before where the snapshot grew too large and we had to revert to the base disk with major data loss. I don't want to make the same mistake again.
In any case I need to get the VM into the inventory so I can delete the snapshot. I'm kind of scared to turn it off though in case it won't turn back on. I also can't back it up at the moment as its not in the inventory!! Every day its running the less relevant the backup will be too!
Any ideas? I have just paid $750 for 3 incident tickets with VMware but the order still isn't showing up in their system.....
Ideas?
