Here's a baffling one which I didn't want to bother everyone with: A friend received a message to download the newest version of Fusion and did so. His computer froze during the download and wouldnt start up thereafter. Spinning wheel
He gave me the MacBook Pro to get working again (it had the Fusion download window frozen on the screen) and nothing I could do would fix it.
Ultimately a Genius bar visit fixed the startup problem in what they called five minutes
End of Story
Except that this computer had exactly the same problem again a few weeks ago. Apparently again while responding to a VMWare download message. It didnt occur to me that it might have something to do with Fusion.
I tried everything on the computer barring asking on some board how you bless a folder in OSX. I did manage to boot up into safe mode. But when there nothing much would work. It did seem to run disk utility to completion. Everything on DU.
But Everything seemed to involve the beach ball and then the whole computer not working and then on restart, the spinning wheel. Then it wouldnt even go into safe mode.
So I started off an external hard drive which worked fine. It suggests that there is nothing wrong with the hardware, and nothing wrong with the hard drive.
SO, - the owner took it to the apple store where the Genius Bar fixed it in a few hours by reinstalling the OS again (and restoring the data)
And they told him that the problem was caused by Fusion being installed. Even though the problem occurred while downloading the updates, not while installing any new version of Fusion.
Makes no sense to me. I didn't believe it. (but he bought a Windows computer instead of re-using Fusion on that MacBook
Anyone got any input? Sounds more relevant to me that this happened while downloading, - twice on the same computer.
