VMWare.exe will not start on Windows 8

I'm having some problems with VMWare Workstation 9 on Windows 8 Pro 64bit that was upgraded from Windows 7 Ultimate, also 64bit.  First I was having problems with the Shared VMs not auto-starting.  That was resolved by deleting a IsFirstRun registry key as suggested by Darius here.  Now, I'm having another problem that seems to have come up after fixing the first problem.  However, reversing the fix by recreating the IsFirstRun key, doesn't fix it.  Whenever I double click the VMWare Workstation icon on my desktop, pinned tile on the Windows 8 start menu, or even run it from a command line, it never opens.  No error message is displayed.  I never even see it in Task Manager or SysInternals Process Explorer.  I looked in the windows event log under Application and there is a warning that says, "The application (VMware Workstation, from vendor VMware, Inc) has the following problem:  To function properly, VMware Workstation must be reinstalled after you upgrade Windows."  I have reinstalled it three or four times, both with and without restarting the machine.  It doesn't make any difference.  When I try to start the app, the same message appears in the event log but no screen ever appears.  The attached file is a screen grab of the event log entry.  (I took it while logged into my machine remotely since I'm not home at the moment.)  Any suggestions on how to fix this one?
