Ive got 8 or so VSphere hosts that I inherited. They are all connected to vcenter.
I show all my hosts are running 4.1 update 3. All are running in a DRS cluster.
Ive got a 1gb Hp switch as my front end switch. This guy is linked to vmnic1 and vmnic2 in each host. Both vmnic1 and vmnic2 are bound to my Virtual machine Switch (vmswitch0) on each host.
That said......it would appear that the previous admin setup trunk ports on the host ports at the HP switch.
trunk 3-4 Trk2 Trunk (port 3 and 4 are host1 vmnic1 and vmnic2)
trunk 5-6 Trk3 Trunk
trunk 7-8 Trk4 Trunk
and so on.....
Now later down the config in the switch i see where he has spanning tree turned on for these ports as well:
spanning-tree Trk2 priority 4
spanning-tree Trk3 priority 4
spanning-tree Trk4 priority 4
and so on.
Is this normal?
Do i need to have each one of my ports in a trunk if the are comming from the same host into the same switch?
Im not sure why it is setup this way. I thought any load balancing is egress so it wouldnt matter since all of our traffic on these ports is ingress.
That said, i do show a nic teaming load balancing policy set to "Route Based on IP HASH" on the virtual machine Vswitch as well as all port groups listed on this vswitch.
Is trunking a port in this way the same as Ether Channel in the cisco world? I always thought you were only supposed to setup "route based on ip Hash" if you were running Ether Channel.
