Re-indexing the vCenter DB

Hello Paul - I need the small clarification on DB size of the vCenter.

We  have faced an issue with vCenter, as soon as connect using VI console  to vCenter, and successfully established the connection, but it hangs  and stats the error "Retrieving Data", upon analyzing the vpxd logs,we have found KB fix http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2009918 and we applied the same, successfully we had it fixed.

And, again the issue has reoccurred, we had used the same KB to fix the issue.

I  am suspecting due to the DB size is huge, and same has been said by SQL  admin too and My vCenter DB is currently of 38 GB where 25 hosts , 110  VMs + 2-3 templates.

Now, I have come up with few choices now for root fix and I had few doubt on this

Please  refer page no# 57  http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-51/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-51-host-management-guide.pdf   --- I have not set any Database Retention policy as such. So I am  planning to keep the logs for only say 60 days. So I would select the  task & events retained for 60 days. After applying these settings,  will it delete the old events & tasks before 60 days immediately or  in future 60 days would be considered to erase...?

Or by using  purging option will be able to reduce the space along with the database  retention policy set as mention in  http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1025914

Please suggest on this or if you any others suggestions on reduce the size of the DB in any other way which helps it for me.
