Win 8 upgrade from XP: "Standard PC" isn't compatible

I'm running Fusion 5.0.2 under 10.8.2. on a Retina MBPro

I have an XP SP3 VM that I'm trying to update to Windows 8.

The VM has a 32GB IDE HD, 2 GB of RAM, with 4 processors allocated (also tried 2 and 1 processors, without effect on the following).

At the start of the install, I get the following error:

This device isn't compatible in Windows 8. Contact the manufacturer for more info.
Standard PC
(Standard computers)

In this case, it seems like VMWare is the "manufacturer" of the PC...any suggestions?
