Homelab

Hello,

I would like to make a vmware homelab.

So, here is the hardware :

- One server,

- A USB key about 16Go,

- 5 SATA disk about 1To each.

Now what i want to do ?

We are OK that vsphere does not support software raid.

I want to install vpshere 5 on the USB key.

This USB key with vpshere will be detected after configuration as "Local Datastore".

On this local datastore i want to install a VM with OpenFiler.

This OpenFiler VM will be directly connected to the 5 SATA disks (How can i do this ?).

After that Openfiler make the RAID 5 and present it to the ESX as one available datastore.

The goal to this lab is to test different architecture (Exchange, AD, CA ...) and to provide services (XBMC, NAS, MAIL, FTP ...).

And all this without bying harware NAS to avoid several physical server.

Is it possible ?

What about performance ?

Do you have suggestions ?

Thanks in advance
