Workstation 9 SVGA Exception 0xc0000094 with Ubuntu and T60p

I built Ubuntu 12.04.1 from the ISO file in Workstation 9.  When I booted into Ubuntu, the login screen was fine but once logged in the desktop manager was visually all screwed up.  Apps launch in their windows ok but anything to do with the desktop manager is unrecognizable.  Then I get this error from Workstation itself:

VMware Workstation unrecoverable error: (svga)

Exception 0xc0000094 has occurred.

A log file is available in "C:\Users\WPWoodJr\Documents\Virtual Machines\vmware.log".

You can request support.

To collect data to submit to VMware support, choose "Collect Support Data" from the Help menu.

You can also run the "vm-support" script in the Workstation folder directly.

We will respond on the basis of your support entitlement.

Has anyone else seen this?  I have a Lenovo T60p with an ATI MOBILITY FireGL V5250 graphics card, driver version 8.561.0.0
