running vm in a window at a higher resolution

I was wondering if it is possible to run a vm in a window at a higher resolution than the window size actually permits (ie make everything in the window smaller)  

Every now and again when the resolution matching part of VMware tools doesn't work I get this effect and actually find it more convenient, especially on a laptop.
