vCenter server 5.1 upgrade issue

I am upgrading from vCenter 4.1 to vCenter 5.1 and I am attempting to just upgrade using my sql server 2005 express database (small environment).

However, I am unable to get connected to the integrated database.  I followed the instructions on the pubs site and I have tried installing the JDBC driver like this kb says http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2006642

I have also tried typing in the JBDC url manually like this pub says:  http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-50/index.jsp?topic=/com.vmware.vsphere.install.doc_50/GUID-72290DA7-FCF9-4331-B108-DAE73728FA14.html

However, it is all to avail... my log says

ERROR <random error code> Failed to establish a connection :com.microsoft etc. : The TCP/IP connection to the host localhost/SQLEXP_VIM, port 1433 has failed.  Error: "null.  verify the connection properities, check that the insance of SQL is running on the host and accepting TCP/IP connections at the port, and that no firewall is blocking connections to the TCP port.

But it is all local on the same server..   I am unable to type in the custom JDBC URL because it will not allow the wizard to complete saying that the fields don't match the information from the URL.

Hoping someone else has came across this issue.

thanks in advance.
