Linux VMs boot up into blank black screen

- no vmware BIOS flash shown at launch

- no text at all any time during boot loader or startup

-

This problem did not exist December last year, but does now 2013-01-12.

Windows VMs are usable.

Any of my debian VMs (squeeze, wheezy, fresh installs) all have this issue.

the underlying VM runs just fine, as I can ssh in and out, or use vmware fusion's shut down menu option.

Reproduce:

create new 64-bit debian linux vm using defaults.

boot from 6.0.6 amd-64 installer - any flavour.

vm screen / console will be consistently black.

OS: Mountain lion, MBP 15" feb 2011 model 16GB RAM, 8 core i7.

I'd consider upgrading to v5.0 if this is a fix, but the reports in the community aren't filling me with confidence.

Any suggestions?
