ESXi and AD authentication

I am configuring my hosts to use AD authentication.  I created the ESX Admins AD group and put myself in it.  I joined my hosts to AD successfully.  I can connect directly to a host using the vsphere client and my AD credentials.  I can also login to a host with my AD credentials in a putty SSH session.  Here is the question/problem.  After I log into the SSH session, i cannot do any admin functions, ie, run esxcli.  If i do su-root then i am able to run esxcli.

Is this by design?  Not sure i can see the purpose, other than logging of access, to what using AD authentication would get me.

Has anyone else seen this same "issue"?
