Hi
We need to move to VMware from Hyper-V, specifically because VMware supports the OpenGL 2.1 video standard. I have read a lot on VMware and have received some great assistance from them, but I have just a few more questions. [Think of the Peter Falk character "Lt. Columbo" ]
We have one server today in our test lab. We want fast prorvisioning and self-service creation of VMs. Non-technical users need to create VMs, therefore the self-service portal is a "want". Fast provisioning is a "want" because we need the non-technical users to test our software in isolated VMs.
Another "want" is the ability to script the creation of the "fast provisioned" machines. We are testing a large legacy application and each bug fix or feature is isolated in its own source control branch. Once tested and approved, we merge the machines to the main software branch. The idea is for us to script the creation of a VM as part of our build process, that way we create a "fast provisioned" VM, the install our software on it, that way the end users can test without having to install each time.
So, my questions are:
- I know cloud director/vsphhere/vcenter should not all be on one host, but this is for our software QA test lab and is not some mission critical situation. The machine is a Dell R710 with 128 RAM. Would this probably be ok for our application?
- What is the min I need to buy? Do I need the Cloud Suite Enterprise to do get the self-service portal and fast provisioning or is there a less expensive verison?
- Can I script the creation of fast provisioned VMs?
- How do I search sub-forums here?
Thanks!
