Reconfigure Windows 2000 VM to ACPI Gets inaccessible_boot_device

I have a Windows 2000 server VM that boots in a stable way under VMWare Workstation 8.0.   The W2K server is configured in Device Manager under Computer as MPS Multiprocessor MPC.   Under VMWare it is given one core.    I want to change this to run ACPI since that is much more energy efficient.

If I go into Device Manager and change the entry to any form of ACPI:

     ACPI Uniprocessor

     ACPI Multiprocessor

on the next boot I get a hex 7B INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE from Windows.

It almost looks like changing the ACPI driver somehow messed with the boot.ini file.   Should switching to ACPI be making any changes to boot.ini?

I read other threads here that talk about switching to the LSI Logic SCSI driver.   I don't understand why that would be necessary.
