Hello,
Our HQ has 3 Dell R710's running ESX 4.1 Update 3. Also a vCenter server 4.1 with update manager, converter and SRM 4.1 are installed.
We have a remote office with 1 HP ProLiant DL380 G5 (Intel Xeon 54xx series). This is also running all of the same said versions above (Except it is ESXi instead of ESX).
Each site has an EMC Celerra storage array and Celerra replicator keeps both sites in sync. Datastores on each vmware host are mounted to the Celerra via NFS.
We have active support so I wanted to look at upgrading / migrating to 5.1 which would include vCenter server first, then update manager and SRM, and then finally use update manager to update each ESX(i) host.
I went to the VMWare compatibility guide and of course the Dell R710's are listed as supported for ESXi 5.1. However at our DR site the HP Proliant DL380 G5 is only listed to support up to ESXi 5.0 Update 2.
Is it possible to upgrade to ESXi 5.1 at the DR site, if not why?
If not, can I upgrade everything to 5.1 at the headquarters and will SRM still work between 4.1 and 5.1?
I guess I wouldn't be able to migrate any vmware guests to a later virtual hardware version and expect them to run properly at the DR site if SRM "failed over".
Any thoughts?
Thank you for your help!
