High %SWPWT without SWW/s

Hi all,

I'm experiencing some performance problems with some of my guest machines, in particular the load average of a given guest reaches over 100 and the guest itself becomes extremely unresponsive.

The guests in question are hosting java webapps deployed via Tomcat, and are within our testing environment so do not receive particularly high use, which is why I'm surprised at encountering performance problems. The guests are running CentOS 5.6 or 5.8 and the ESXi version is 5.1.0 799733.

From looking at esxtop my attention is drawn to %SWPWT, which for the guests in question is regularly around 50-100. However, when I switch to memory view I can't see any machines reading from or writing to swap (SWR/s and SWW/s are all zero).

Can someone explain why this would be?

Many thanks

Matt
