How did I end up with so many vmdk files (most of which are 320 KB)?

I'm new at this; please be gentle .

I made a new Win 7-64 Enterprise VM in Workstation  8.0.5. I asked for a 60GB virtual disk implemented with multiple files,  and I ended up with 64 vmdk files (49 of which are 320 KB).

I  did the same thing a few months ago (on an earlier version of  Workstation) and its 60 GB virtual disk comprises just 10 vmdk files,  ranging in size from 1 GB to 28 GB.

Why did the new VM end up with so many more vmdk files, and so many small ones?
