vSphere 5.1 guests can not be reliably backed up until Update 1!

According to the article below vSphere 5.1 VDDK 5.1 has issues. How can we use this in PRODUCTION environment?

In other words does the third party backup automatically use the newest VDDK or will it use the VDDK that it has support for only?
